SAN ANTONIO – Previously undefeated Julius Jackson (19-1, 15 KOs) experienced a nightmare debut for Premier Boxing Champions by getting dropped three times in the opening round and stopped 45 seconds into round two by Jose Uzcategui (24-1, 20 KOs).
Uzcategui had Jackson measured with overhand rights, scoring the first knockdown less than a minute into the contest.
“It was a pretty fast start and that was about it,” said Jackson. “I just got hit and I don’t remember much after that.”
Jackson tried to brawl his way out of trouble, allowing Uzcategui to score two more knockdowns off devastating combinations of left and right hooks.
The minute break did little to alleviate Jackson’s damage and another barrage of shots, punctuated by a left hook, scored the fourth knockdown and forced referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight.
“This is everything we’ve been working towards for three months,” said an elated Uzcategui.”I want to thank my entire team because they constantly drilled into me that when (Jackson) throws the jab I should immediately shoot the right hand over the top. We knew that the best part of his game was his jab, but we were focused all training camp to throw the right hand and tonight we were able to do so.”
ARGENIS MENDEZ UD10 MIGUEL VAZQUEZ: The opening contest was an ugly, mauling affair that saw Argenis Mendez take a controversial unanimous decision over former lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez. The fight was a typical Vazquez affair with a lot of awkward exchanges, holding and cheap shots. Vazquez was docked a point in the seventh for holding. Final scorecards were 99-90, 97-92 and 95-94, perhaps sending a clear message to Vazquez that his style of fighting is no longer appreciated.
